Fitting a refrigeration unit and refrigeration equipment to a van body

We select and fit cooling units for your body and cargo: engine drive, 220/380 V electric drive, self-powered diesel and electric 12/24 V for electric trucks. Installation, charging and warranty — in Almaty, service through dealer networks across Kazakhstan. Most often we fit them on light chassis — fitting refrigeration equipment on a GAZelle (Next, Business, GAZon): a turnkey refrigerator with the unit selected for the body volume.

Select a unit →

Fitting a refrigeration unit means mounting a refrigeration and heating unit to a body that already exists — yours or ours. If the body is insulated, we mount the unit and commission it; if it is dry-freight, we insulate the panel first, otherwise the unit will run without stopping and still not reach the range. A conversion to a refrigerated van is registered with the paperwork: without the entry in the vehicle document a roadworthiness test may be refused.

Quote is based on body, chassis and temperature range.

Principle

How a refrigeration unit works

The principle is the same as a home refrigerator, only the components are spread around the vehicle.

The compressor compresses the refrigerant and drives it around the circuit. In the condenser (the outdoor unit on the roof or front wall) the refrigerant gives off heat to the outside, and in the evaporator inside the body it takes heat from the cargo compartment. The evaporator fans distribute cold air evenly around the body. The thermostat holds the set temperature, and automatic hot-gas defrost clears frost from the evaporator without the driver, while the cab controller shows the body temperature and lets you change the mode without leaving the vehicle (holding accuracy — down to 1 °C, on the self-powered Supra — 0.1 °C).

Drive

Compressor drive types

The main choice when buying is what the unit runs on.

Engine drive

The compressor is turned by a belt from the engine. The most affordable option for distribution: there is cold while the engine runs. Models: Carrier CITIMAX, Elinge C-series, Kaida.

Electric drive 220/380 V (stand-by)

An additional electric motor: when parked, the unit runs on mains power — the body holds temperature at night without the engine. Carrier Xarios, Pulsor, NEOS.

Self-powered (diesel)

Its own diesel engine — independence from the vehicle's engine. For long-haul transport and large bodies of 40+ m³. Carrier SUPRA: −25 °C at +40 °C outside.

Electric 12/24 V

Powered by the on-board network or traction battery — a solution for electric trucks and small volumes. Kaida, YIDE, Elinge 07-series.

Temperature ranges

Temperature modes and conditions

0…+12 °C — cooling

Vegetables, fruit, drinks, dairy, flowers. A low-power unit and a body with a 50–80 mm panel are enough.

−18…−20 °C — freezing

Meat, fish, semi-finished products. A power reserve and a body with an 80–100 mm panel without cold bridges are needed.

−25 °C — deep freezing

Ice cream and long-distance transport. Self-powered Carrier SUPRA units hold −25 °C at +40 °C outside.

Heating in winter

Power is calculated for heat of +40…+45 °C, and for the Kazakh winter the plant recommends only units with a heating function: the cargo must not be frozen either.

Body

Body requirements

A unit holds temperature only in the right body.

The body must be: sandwich panels 80–100 mm for freezing (50–80 mm for cooling), a continuous insulated floor, three-chamber door seals and no cold bridges. Otherwise the unit will run itself into the ground and the temperature will drift. We make insulated vans for a unit of any capacity, and we restore the airtightness of older bodies before installation.

Cargo

What will you carry?

The mode and equipment depend on the cargo — broken down by product.

Meat and fish

−18…0 °C, sanitary requirements, body washing

Pharmaceuticals

Validation, +2…+8 °C, temperature control and logging

Dairy

0…+6 °C, daily trips, frequent door openings

Strawberries and berries

0…+6 °C and high humidity — fast removal from the field

Ice cream

−20 °C and below: an eutectic van is needed for distribution

FAQ

FAQ

How much does fitting refrigeration equipment cost?

A kit with installation — Elinge, Carrier or Kaida sized to the body volume. The price depends on the body volume, temperature range and drive type. Installation and refrigerant charging are included in the price.

Can a cooling unit be fitted to a finished van?

Yes, if the body is insulated and airtight. Before installation we check the condition of the panels and seals; if needed we restore the tightness. Fitting a unit to a dry-freight (uninsulated) van is pointless — the cold will escape through the walls.

Will the unit hold cold when parked with the engine off?

Engine-driven units — no, they work only with the engine running. For parked operation you need a stand-by electric drive (connection to a 220/380 V mains) or a self-powered unit with its own diesel engine.

Which unit is needed for an electric truck?

Electric units powered at 12/24 V from the traction battery — with no engine drive. We'll select a model for the body volume and the mileage per shift.

Is there service in other cities of Kazakhstan?

Yes. Vehicles with our bodies and equipment are serviced through dealer networks across Kazakhstan; we do the installation in Almaty.
