An extruded aluminium profile — the horizontal member of the side guard itself. A hollow box with a longitudinal slot: the profile seats on the bracket through the slot, and the ends are closed with a cap. The anodised surface needs no paint and does not corrode from road salt.
The profile is cut to the wheelbase of the particular vehicle, so it is ordered by the metre rather than in a fixed length. A body normally takes two rows — one per side, at two levels.
